A job listing on Apple’s official “Jobs at Apple” website page references an unannounced OS, titled “homeOS”. This comes only 6 days before WWDC 2021 is set to commence.
The job listing is for a Senior iOS Engineer for Apple Music and the listing makes multiple references to “homeOS”, including the following:
“You’ll get to work with system engineers across Apple, learning the inner-workings of iOS, watchOS, tvOS and homeOS, and optimizing your code for performance in ways only Apple can.”
“The Apple Music Frameworks team owns the technology stack that enables the system-integrated Apple Music experience on all of our mobile platforms: iOS, watchOS, and homeOS”Source: Jobs at Apple
Although the website doesn’t provide any information on what homeOS actually is, it’s highly likely that homeOS is an operating system for HomePod models or some kind of Smart Home OS that will be integrated into various Apple products.
There is valid reason to believe that HomePods will be getting an OS of their own. HomePods actually run a modified version of tvOS called audioOS, so it is likely that Apple has decided to built an operating system solely for the HomePod, especially considering the HomePod mini has been gaining popularity since it’s introduction in October of last year.
@Jiorku, a reliable leaker, said that homeOS is going to be name of the OS that HomePods and other Apple Smart Home devices will run. Jiorku says that this is in an effort bring all the home devices ecosystem under one single name.
Jiorku also says that this OS is for future devices that haven’t been announced by Apple yet, including the rumoured upcoming HomePod with a screen.
WWDC 2021 is taking place on Monday, June 7th. Apple is expected to announce iOS 15, iPadOS 15, macOS 12 “Monterey”, tvOS 15, watchOS 8, and now homeOS. WWDC 21 will be free to watch on apple.com come June 7th.
