Leaker Josh Thomas (@) shared a screenshot from Apple’s website which shows a list of devices that will be compatible with iPhoneOS 14.
According to Josh Thomas, the screenshot was taken by someone other than him before Apple took down a website on apple.com that accidentally leaked the new name for iOS and the compatible devices list.
If this leak is real, it means that the following devices with be getting iPhoneOS 14:
- iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 11
- iPhone XS and XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
- iPhone 6s and 6s Plus
- iPhone SE (1st Generation)
- iPhone SE (2nd Generation)
- iPod touch 7th Generation
Many leakers have suggested that Apple will be renaming iOS to iPhoneOS at this year’s WWDC. The iPhone’s original OS was named iPhoneOS, but after the introduction of the iPad, which ran the same OS as the iPhone, Apple’s decided to rebrand ‘iPhoneOS’ as ‘iOS’. Considering the iPad now runs iPadOS, it would make sense to bring the iPhone’s operating system name in line with the rest of Apple’s software. For example – iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, macOS. iOS is definitely an outlier in these names.
Of course, there is no information as to what will happen with the iPod touch if Apple rename iOS to iPhoneOS. I don’t think Apple will bring out an ‘iPodOS’.
iOS 14, or iPhoneOS 14, is expected to be announced alongside iPadOS 14, tvOS 14, watchOS 7, macOS 10.16, and some hardware products such as AirTags, at WWDC 2020 this Monday, June 22nd.
