As for why the iPhone 12 Pro has a smaller battery compared to the cheaper iPhone 12 Max, says the reason for this is that the iPhone 12 Pro has much bigger camera components compared the iPhone 12 Max. In order to make room inside the iPhone for the larger camera components, Apple likely reduced the size of the battery.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is also getting a smaller battery compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max due to the addition of the LiDAR sensor and bigger camera comments.
