A new report from has emerged detailing Apple’s work on an upcoming 5G iPhone with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner sensor underneath the screen, and that this new iPhone is be scheduled to be arriving this year.
The report details how Apple’s OLED manufacturer, BOE, is working with with Qualcomm to make an under-display for the upcoming 2020 iPhone models. The report also says that this iPhone is scheduled to be arriving in the second half of 2020.
This technology isn’t new. Many of the new Samsung flagships use this technology in their phones, but this would be the first time for Apple, provided this rumour is genuine.
This is not the first time we’ve heard about this feature supposedly arriving to iPhones. On the 31st of December 2019, a leak suggested the same thing, although that leak suggested all 2020 models would receive the under-display Touch ID sensor.
However, Apple-leaker Jon Prosser said on Twitter that he has not heard anything from his sources that suggest Apple is working on an iPhone with under-display fingerprint scanning capabilities. He goes on to say that it could be possible, but he just has not heard anything regarding this feature.
There is rumoured to be 4 new iPhones arriving from Apple in 2020 – a lower-end 5.4” iPhone, a 6.1” lower end iPhone, a high end 6.1” iPhone, and a high-end 6.7” iPhone (likely to be the replacement to the ‘Max’ iPhones). Most rumours that have emerged about these upcoming phones have not suggested that Apple would be adding a fingerprint scanner to them, so, as with all leaks, take this one with a grain of salt too. Nothing is official until Apple announce the new iPhones this September coming.
