Highly reliable Apple-leaker Jon Prosser (@jon_prosser) has shared information today regarding Apple’s upcoming Over-the-Ear headphones and the next generation of AirPods, named ‘AirPods X’.
Beginning with the mysterious over-the-ear headphones, Jon Prosser is saying that these headphones will cost an estimated $350/~£280/~€320 at launch. Prosser also mentioned that the new headphones’ codename is B515, and that the estimated release date/announcement date is aimed for WWDC 2020. Prosser also said that these headphones will be similar to the Bose 700 headphones, which you can see below:
The next audio product Jon Prosser spoke about is the next generation of AirPods, dubbed ‘AirPods X’. Prosser says that these AirPods’ codename is B517, and that they will cost an estimated $200/~£160/~€185 at launch. He also says that the estimated release date/announcement date is aimed for September or October, presumably around the time of the Apple Event in September, or the Apple Event that is held in October, although this is usually reserved for Macs. Interestingly, Prosser points out that these AirPods will be similar to the Beats X, which you can find below:
If the AirPods X are similar in design to the Beats X, that could mean that Apple are planning on bringing a wire between the two earbuds. One of the most attractive features of AirPods is that it is truly wireless, and has no wire between the two earbuds. However, this could mean that Apple are going to be changing that with these headphones.
However, at the end of this tweet announcing these details, Prosser mentions that Apple’s end goal is to phase out Beats. This I don’t understand, and I would be surprised if that was Apple’s intention, especially with the huge following that Beats already has.
That aside, it would appear that we could be expecting the long-awaited over-the-ear headphones from Apple at WWDC 2020, which will be using an entirely new online format, due to the COVID-19 virus.
